The pace of 12 year old Simon Thorn's story was fast throughout the book as Simon discovers that he and his family are able to change into animal forms and are part of a secret world made up of five Animalgam kingdoms. As each of the five fight for supremacy among themselves, Simon creates friendships with Winter, Jam and Ariana who all belong to different kingdoms. Readers will enjoy the battle scenes, the unique and well-developed characters and will sometimes be caught off-guard by plot twists. Book 2 should be held at the ready for when the first is finished! Excellent choice for fantasy readers of all ages, but with a solid fifth grade reading level, younger or less capable readers will need a partner.
