This book had potential but had too many problems to be considered "good". Instead of incorporating the extremely interesting real history of the Egyptians he make stuff up. He seems to know intimate details about Egyptian culture but then gets simple facts wrong (like calling the pyramid of Khufu the pyramid of Cheops (Greek name, not Egyptian), and saying the great pyramid was in Saqqara when it is actually in Giza). I also did not are for how he assigned personalities and motives to real historical people when he should have made his own fictional characters. He seems to really hate Senenemut (a real Egyptian) which seems very odd for a modern person to dislike someone who has been dead for 3000 years. The wife of the king seems to based on Hatshepsut but he changes her name (but not Senemenut). All in all I found this story to be a bit boring and the inconsistencies took me out of the narrative.Tags : The Mask of Ra [Paul Doherty] on Amazon.com. *FREE* shipping on qualifying offers. This is PC Doherty's mystery/detective series, with the lead character a judge, under Pharaoh Hatshepsut, the female pharaoh. ( He refers to her by another form of her name Hatusu ). Judge Amerotke seeks to solve crimes with the usual group of helpers/ sidekicks. Not as good as Mr. Doherty's more serious books, but light and easy reading, especially if you like mysteries and detective novels. There are multiple books in this series, and I hope he continues to write more.
An intriquing historical fiction set against the customs of ancient Egypt. Doherty knows how to mix historical discriptions into a gripping mystery. It is especially interesting how He empowers woman as a Pharoh leading an Army..

How did I not know about this book before. Egypt came alive for me in this book the same way it did when I was a kid watching The Ten Commandments for the first time. Perfect for people who enjoy history and a good mystery. Already a contender for the best book I'll read this year.
It kept my interest and enjoyed the characters.
Average read, no real mystery, lots of things running in all kinds of directions. don't think I will read the other books.
A good read full of pictures of life in ancient Egypt set around a very interesting story of court intrigue, murder, and assassins.
