Twelve year old James Logan has quite enough going on in his life, what with three not-quite-right aunts, his autistic sister and his own weirdness to deal with, he really doesn’t need any more excitement. All he wants is to get to Scotland to help his father on his latest archaeological dig.
But then his missing father’s recent find puts him in the cross-hairs of a mysterious madman, and James finds himself plunged into an underworld, where bowler hats and waistcoats are more in fashion than jeans, where carriages whiz around on train tracks and food is delivered by cantankerous, mechanical chimney waiters.
James's new friend David, who's trying to discover why his sensitive sister has suddenly started sleepwalking, and Fox, who’s trying to figure out why her desk-job-loving parents went out on a mission that got them killed, band together to help James, and with a bit of spying, breaking and entering and good old research, find themselves confronted with riddles, hidden passages and secrets concealed behind coded doors.
When a furry spy reports that James’s Father is in imminent danger, a desperate James sets out to rescue. Together they make their way to the underwater city of Aramid, where James, realizing that far more than his father’s life is at stake, is forced to make a difficult choice, and where he comes face to face with a murderous villain reaching for power.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this. I liked how the author weaved the old with the new, technology with fantasy and integrated a number of cultural elements into the settings. Well done.
