Witchful Thinking A Jolie Wilkins Novel H P Mallory 9780345531452 Books
I have enjoyed the first books in this series, but this one has just irritated me. There are two parts integrated with each other. There is the regular-font text that mostly recaps the first books, and the italicized text where Jolie is writing in her diary. 2/3 of the diary writing is teenaged angsty about Rand and the other third details what is happening in her life, in other words, what little plot there is to be found. There is, of course, a cliffhanger at the end that you can see coming a mile away.I'm sorry I sound bitter, but I am angry at myself with putting up with the repetition in hopes there would be some plot. Nope. Well,, there's a tiny bit, but a review with spoilers would probably tell you all you need to know.
Julie has always been naive and childish, but she's Queen of the Underworld now, and has learned zilch and acts like a 14 year old.
I will start the next book with hope in my heart for an advancement of the story, but if there is no evidence shortly, I will not be tricked again.

Witchful Thinking A Jolie Wilkins Novel H P Mallory 9780345531452 Books Reviews
I was introduced to H.P. Mallory a little over a year ago when I first purchased "Fire Burn and Cauldron Bubble". Since then I have been hooked on both of her series. All of her books keep your attention and are highly addictive.
Now on to Witchful Thinking. I know a lot of people here complain that this book rehashes her previous books, and it does, it allows for someone to jump into this series without reading the previous books. To those who are jumping in at this book, I HIGHLY recommend that you read her first two books as they are well worth it. You will love them and breeze through them as they are that good. Now back to the rehashing, Mallory's recalling past events is in the form of memories and recollections. I thought she covered important areas well and for her first title that is not self-published, this is important. Fans from her self-published books need to embrace this as she is exposed to a larger audience now and needs to fill in some of the back story. I was not bored at all in this book and sometimes appreciated details from the other books. So, do not let the rehashing of the story deter you from the books.
The story itself was entertaining, I finished this book in a day. The characters, especially Jolie, grow within this story. Jolie has increased responsibility, has to deal with the frustrating relationship with Rand, the advances of Sinjin, and the mystery that surrounds Mercedes. Rand is increasingly frustrating in his stubborness, but he sticks to his character. He finally does what we wished he would have done a while ago with surprising results. Sinjin is mysterious as always. He is such a wild card, it is difficult to determine his motivations. His words in this book shocked me and completely contradict his actions in the end. I am happy to see that Christa is getting her own life, I am curious as to how this will change her friendship with Jolie and its dynamic. The end was shocking and left so many unanswered questions, which I know Mallory will address in due time. I cannot wait to read "The Witch is Back".
Also, if you enjoyed this book please read the previous books if you have not already. You should also read the Dulcie O'Neil series, starting with "To Kill a Warlock". I cannot decide which series I like more, so I will just say I like them equally for different reasons. You will not regret any of these purchases.
I never recap book plots in my reviews because that's what the book description is for and I'm sensitive about giving away spoilers. However, I do like to take a few minutes to share why I really enjoy a particular book or series, especially in one of my favorite genres of paranormal novels. I have been a fan of HP Mallory ever since discovering both her series, including the first two books in this Jolie Wilkins series. I find her books entertaining, witty and addictive, which always leave me wanting more. Therefore, I was surprised to see the negative reviews for this installment in the series. Having read this book as quickly as the first two and having read the reviews, I'm surprised at the disconnect since I personally loved this installment as much as the first two. It is important to note that since the first two books were self published and this is the first book put out by a publisher, there is a lot of back story in this book to catch up new readers who may want to jump in and start with this installment. HP Mallory warned her fans about this on her Facebook page so I felt prepared when I started this book. So yes, for long time fans, some people may find a lot of back story and redundancy to the previous two books, but I think it's understandable why she was asked to do that by the publisher and to expect that book 4 won't need all the back story. However, I didn't find that it distracted from my enjoyment of the book at all. In fact, it helped remind me of a few details I'd forgotten since it's been awhile since I read the first two books. I think some people were also dissatisfied with the ongoing love triangle between Jolie and the lovely Rand and sexy Sinjin. I have always rooted for Rand but I must admit that this book had me thinking Sinjin might win my vote, until the end... which I can't tell you about because I promised no spoilers! While some readers seemed dissatisfied with this, I am intrigued when an author can sway my opinion from one major character to another throughout a series. It keeps me guessing! Add in the fact that this book ends with a heck of a cliffhanger... and yep, I'm definitely ready for book 4! My recommendation if you are new to the series is to start at book one but definitely give this installment a read too! If you are a long time fan, my recommendation is to go into this book knowing that there's going to be a lot of back story but if that bothers you, have faith that you will back in the Jolie groove by the next book.
