“The Rising” features Jim Thurmond, a sort of everyman who’s been pinned down by a zombie apocalypse and has lost his new wife and child to the undead. He’s a divorcee, however, and has additionally lost all hope for his ex-wife and young son have survived. Until he gets a very brief phone call forcing him out of his hole and on the road to rescue his son. Thurmond is the most developed character and clearly the central protagonist. His emotional journey is the most wrenching. He’s followed by Frankie, a drug-addicted prostitute. Her story has a definitive, redemptive arc. Martin is probably the least developed, an aging priest whose self-assigned purpose is to help Thurmond along. Since Keene is unafraid to murder his characters, there’s some question, during the entire novel, about who will survive and who won’t. The first few chapters can come across as somewhat slow and that’s because Keene is setting a particularly large stage. There are a number of secondary characters and plots that need to be put in place for the horror show that is to follow. It makes sense later, but it can be a bit of a slog to get there. Once Baker, Frankie, Martin, and the obligatory rogue military unit are established, the pace increases exponentially. Keene takes virtually all the modern zombie tropes—as well as one critical aspect of zombies past—and spins up the ante on the nightmare. No one is spared the horror of the world collapsing and there’s a nice mix of undead and living motivation. Often, zombie stories are best when the walking dead are treated like a natural disaster. This allows the living characters to drive the plot. Keene puts a more adversarial spin on that idea, where the rising dead are unmistakably antagonists with some motivations of their own. I truly enjoyed the book, it sits well with other zombie media that I’ve enjoyed and that makes perfect sense to me since the book was released around the same time and influenced by the same lore that I’d been enjoying.

Now, about that ending…

It’s a good ending. Anyone who says otherwise is looking for a reading experience that holds their hand and leads them to an obvious conclusion.

For years the zombie genre has struggled to find ways to make the mindless monsters much more terrifying. Whether they are slow and absent-minded flesh eating machines or the more recent high-speed runner zombies, it seems like almost every angle has been explored. Yet, Brian Keene found a way to take an old tale and add a new dimension to it that is both satisfying and horrific. The zombies in The Rising are much more than they appear because they can think, use tools, drive, and strategize! Hiding in a basement, cellar, or barricading yourself in an abandoned home will not save you. As civilization breaks down and the good guys go bad, the zombies exploit humanity's darkest secrets and most precious weaknesses on an apocalyptic mission to destroy every living thing on the earth.

You cannot go wrong with this book! It is a fantastic read for fans of smart horror and for readers who like their gore and violence explicit and unforgiving.
I couldn't get past the first few chapters. I know it is about zombies, but it just became too disgusting to read in every paragraph about the maggots crawling around in eye sockets and entrails falling out as people walked etc. The zombie fetus attacking out of the womb of its zombie mother just about put me over the edge. The plot line is somewhat unique in this genre but I just got sick of so much detailed gore ALL. The. Time.
I like the zombie movies, but maybe the word pictures were just more than I could stomach. If you can get past that, the story line had potential.
THE RISING by Brian Keene is a metaphysical twist on zombies. The first time I read the original version, I didn't like the undead. I was into viral, unthinking zombies at the time Keene's novel was first released. As much as I love the author's work, several years went by before I would even consider giving the novel another chance. I'm glad I did.

The nature of the undead is bad enough, and pretty damn hopeless, but the military has also turned on the survivors, using them for slave labor and other atrocities. Sounds typical of this genre, but Keene's version of a zombie apocalypse is anything but typical. The author switches POVs as well as storylines, until several characters converge on the location where everything began, adding multiple layers and tragedies to battle mankind has no chance of winning.

Readers will get road rash of the mind trying to hold on to this savage ride with Keene and his undead nightmare. Best strap in tight.
I was debating giving this book a 4 star rating because it started off and ended strong, but I feel that I have to give it a 3 star rating because throughout the book you're constantly getting introduced to new characters. The characters do end up connecting through the book and towards the end, I just thought that it was a little bit taxing at times trying to keep up with multiple story lines. Other than that, I will say that the different journeys the characters take are very immersive. It's a world in the process of dying and what's left in its wake is horrific for everyone. The most terrifying element in the book is the human faction of the National Guard. This is not a typical "zombie novel" it's more of a demonic possession horror story in the setting of a zombie apocalypse, which might deter some readers, but it was still enjoyable nonetheless. The only other reason I have to give this book a 3 star review rather than a 4 star is the ending. I wont spoil it but it really felt like a slap in the face in how abruptly it ended. The last 100 pages are really well written, I think I read about the last 130 pages or so in one sitting, just because of how well everything was falling into place. It's action building to an epic crescendo of intensity, it had an amazing set up, all to be ruined by a more than lackluster ending.
