Invasion Book I Resistance The Invy War 1 eBook JF Holmes

Alien occupation has been done before, in Niven and Pournelle's "Footfall" and the fine Vampire Earth series by E.E. Knight. Mr. Holmes' version of an Earth occupied by aliens is both broadened by the several remaining centers of international resistance (North America, Japan, and Scotland) and confined by an alien virus that wiped out most of the planet. The Dragons command an occupying force of fierce, carnivorous wolverines, "uplifted" and armed with plasma weapons. Much of the human population is cowed or even collaborating, and time is running out for humans to be able to take their planet back.

General Warren was a teen given command of the space forces in a program inspired by "Ender's Game". (That is not the only homage to classic sci fi.) When the campaign failed, Warren was made the scapegoat, was universally reviled and hid for years until discovered by resistance scouts. He is dragged back to lead a last gasp campaign against the Invy occupation.

There are some great touches in this book: uplifted whales and dolphins and gorillas (so far), the various resistance figures, some of whom are lost along the way, and the unflinching look at the psychology of occupation. Mr. Holmes wonderfully captures the heavy weight of hopelessness among an occupied people, and how that can inhibit resistance as much as the weapons of the occupiers.

The book ends with launch of the campaign to free the planet. No one is optimistic about its chances, but it would take enormous willpower to not read the next book when it comes out.

Invasion Book I Resistance The Invy War 1 eBook JF Holmes Reviews

Familiar characters and a believable scenario. The indomitable spirit of humans come through every word.
Ok, so much for the high-falutin' sounding line. I LOVED IT! read it through in one night! DAMN. Can't wait for the next installment!
Or for that matter man kind... We have a built in dislike of being controlled as we all see today in places going to war over religion and ideology etc. But what if we finally found a means of uniting as an entire species instead of along Creed, skin color, or religious lines? This book illustrates that perfectly as mankind fights for survival and to push out foreign(alien) Invaders hell-bent on forcing us down a rung on the food chain ladder. In General Warren we trust.
So I bought this book a while back and it was in my reading pile. Something I read twigged me onto it and it went to the top of the stack.
MY GOD WHY DIDN'T I READ THIS SOONER??

Excellent book with a very different kind of protagonist in play. The bad guys, alien invasion and they deserve everything that happens to them.
Took me about 30 pages to get into it and then it was a rocket ride of action all the way through.

Some of the scenes brought some memories back but this author really knows his stuff and can write.
FAIR WARNING This book is the beginning of a SERIES. Keep that in mind.
I love science fiction. Preferring the invasion or Earth under attack themes.

When I read the teaser for The Invy War, I was curious. Never having read anything by JF Holmes, I took a chance.

I loved the lifting of Ender's Game/ War elements. Also 2001, and Battlestar Galactica! They influenced the science fiction world and the public perception of space, so why wouldn't they be borrowed and pirated from when mankind worked to ready an answer?

But the past tells the story, and the future is last ditch. I have the second book to read, and I'm going there now.

Well worth investing the time. It's human. It's well written for reality perception. It's satisfying.

And it has a over used cliche cliffhanger.
That worked on me.

😁
It's 11 years after the Combined Earth Forces (CEF) have been defeated by the Invy race and their Wolverine soldiers. Most of the worlds population has been killed with the area from 30 North to 30 South rendered uninhabitable to humans by a lethal virus. The CEF which has been in hiding, biding its time realizes that if they don't act soon the Human civilization of Earth will be lost forever. Scout Teams, with names familiar to the authors' Zombie Killer series, have been given the mission of retrieving the former leader of the CEF, then a teenager and now in his late twenties to lead the CEF counterstrike against the alien invaders. The book, first in a series, ends on a suspenseful note (sorry no spoilers) that leaves the reader looking forward to the next book to find out what happens next.

If you enjoyed the authors Zombie Killer series, you will enjoy this next foray, into an alternate timeline, with Irregular Scout Team One.
